Our Volunteer Coordinator Lucy Mitchell went to visit Kirsty at the Orchard in North Whitehawk on Sunday. What an incredible space, it stretches for acres and all on our doorstep. There was a free lesson in planting walnut trees. We learned about loosening roots gently, and placing the tree in a wide hole so there is plenty of room to stretch out. The roots were sprinkled with some powder to start a network of micorrhizal fungi underground for transferring nutrients. The trees were staked and protective netting wrapped around the tree to protect it from being nibbled by critters. Thanks Kirsty for a great Sunday morning.
