At the end of July this year, the community of East Brighton created a moving memorial to the NHS staff and local people who have lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic. Located at the Spire Art Centre on Eastern Road, very close to the Royal Sussex Hospital, the ‘Souls to Paradise’ Memorial was a space for people to come together, to remember and to grieve.
Comprising 2,000 individually folded paper cranes, many with the names of lost loved ones written inside or on the wings, Souls to Paradise received over 300 visitors, many of whom left moving reflections.
One of the GPs at Wellsbourne Healthcare CIC described the memorial as “a fabulous coming together of surgery, community and creativity, resulting in something really beautiful and meaningful.”
The memorial was created by Dr Christa Beesley from Wellsbourne Healthcare CIC and local artist, Mr Ian Leaver-Blaxstone, who also works at the surgery. They were assisted by many volunteers.
