Wellsbourne Community Make A Day Of It!

The sun shone, the band played, the apple juice flowed and laughter rang out all afternoon on Sunday. The occasion was the first ever Wellsbourne Community Garden Party. Dr Veronica Sutcliffe, a GP and Director at Wellsbourne Healthcare CIC, and East Brighton Councillor Gill Williams officially opened the garden and thanked the many volunteers who had made the garden, and the party, happen.

With barbecued burgers and bangers, popcorn, fresh smoothies, apple juice, tea, coffee and cup cakes on offer – for free – all afternoon, more than 150 people danced, sang, chatted and laughed the afternoon away. As well as enjoying all the free food and entertainment, including both Malaysian and Bollywood dance demonstrations, party goers had the chance to forage for wild food in the garden, discover tree facts, stretch out on yoga mats, get a massage, have a blood pressure check, press apples, do some face painting, decorate a pebble, learn a musical instrument, listen to lockdown poetry, learn Bollywood dance moves, do some creative story telling and hang out with Spiderman and and Elsa and Anna from Frozen!

The Garden Party fell on the last day of the City Council’s highly successful TAKEPART Festival 2021, which was all about being healthy, having fun and meeting friends through being out and about and active. Community gardening is a fantastic way to do all of those things – and is great for your wellbeing too.

If you would like to get involved with the Community Garden, please contact our Community Team at [email protected] or fill in our Volunteer Form. We meet every Tuesday from 3pm to 6pm. Why not pop down to see us. We always stop for a cuppa and a biscuit around 4.30pm. There is always lots to do for all ages and abilities.

Kind and generous donations on the day amounted to £103.63, which will go towards more plants and trees for the garden.

Among the many people organisers, Wellsbourne Healthcare CIC, wish to thank are the garden volunteers themselves and coordinator, Mala Nathan, Councillors Gill Williams and Nancy Platt, Little Green Pig, Make A Smile, Music For Connections, Manor Gym, East Brighton Food Coop, Crew Club, Trust for Developing Communities and Pete, Azhar, Kate, Alanna, Naomi, Lucy, Raquel, Sarah, Patrick, Very, Mel, Claire, Morgan, Vera, Anna, Lydia and Posy.

The Community Garden has been supported by the National Lottery Community Fund, Plant Your Postcode and Brighton & Hove City Council Environment Improvement Board
